Philip Whalen was born on October 20th, 1923 in Portland, Oregon. He served in the United States Army SOrps. during World War II. Using the G.I. Bill, he attended Reed College with friends Lew Welsh and Gary Snyder. He read with Allen Ginsberg, Michael McClure, Philip Lamantia, and Gary Snyder at the Six Gallery in San Francisco in October 1955. He was ordained a Zen Buddhist priest in 1973, and became the head monk, Dharma Sangha, in 1984 in Sante Fe, New Mexico. Whalen died on June 26th, 2002 of a long illness in San Francisco at the age of 78.
