But too often, sociologists limit the definition of rape as something that exclusively happens to women. And while it's true that women are commonly raped throughout the world on a daily basis, rape is a crime no matter whom it's being enforced upon. Some people tend to forget, men are often raped too. Not as typically by other women, but men are raped by other men in all-male prisons. Women are raped by other women in all-female prisons, as well. And child abuse - - that's a whole other issue in itself!
My point is, rape is awful no matter who the victim or the aggressor is. I get very sick of people trying to "prove" the empty myth that "women have it harder than men in life" by using rape as a prime factor in such a ridiculous argument. These people claim that "more" women than men are raped, thus making life "harder" for women in general. But with all the unreported rapes that occur in the world, how can we mathematically prove exactly how many people are raped each day, or each hour, or even each minute? When males get raped, how likely do you think it is for a male to report it? Not very. Historically, society has forced the male gender into such a standardized stereotype of machismo and virility that males of any age who get raped, be it in prisons or elsewhere, can be too humiliated to actually report it out of fear of being ridiculed by society. Such is the scenario for many female rape victims, as well.
Regardless of gender, race, or sexual orientation, the rape of one victim cannot be deemed as "worse" than the rape of another victim. Rape is bad no matter who the victim!
What if an innocent man or woman is wrongfully sent to prison, and then while he/she is in prison he/she gets raped by another inmate? Not even a guilty prisoner deserves to be raped by a fellow inmate!! This situation is just as awful as when a random person off the street is raped by a stranger. Rapists simply do not belong in our society. A rape is a rape, and it's a crime even if the victim is a criminal.
Consequently, I contend that a person who is being raped has the right to kill her/his attacker in self-defense if she/he cannot escape the attacker. Rapists are better off dead, rather than running around free in our society raping and/or killing even more people.
Do you think I'm being too harsh on rapists? - - well, try telling that to a rape victim! I doubt that she/he will have much sympathy for her/his aggressor.
Women, men, and children are all raped on a daily basis. But all the media seems to focus on is how women are being raped. It is equally wrong for males and children to be raped, but for some reason the media doesn't like to talk about it. By ignoring the universal severity of rape and making the crime socially-defined as gender-specific, global societies are doing a great disservice to past, present, and future rape victims everywhere.
