Piedmon likes to think of himself as a gentleman. He's polite and courteous, even gracious to people who should see him as an enemy. Trusting him, however gracious he may be, would be foolish. Beneath his charm, Piedmon is sadistic and cruel with little thought to the consequences of his actions.
When the Digidestined arrive in the Digital World, they're told defeating Piedmon is paramount to ending the Digital World's suffering. That's only half correct. Piedmon is but a single piece of the puzzle and if he's able, he will stand in the way of solving it.
