Kagoshima, with the Sakurajima Volcano looming above

CLICK! to skip text and get to the pics

Kagoshima is the southernmost city on the island of Kyushu. This beautiful resort city of 550,000 residents faces the majestic Mt. Sakurajima volcano across the scenic Kinko Bay. The city is blessed with a wealth of history and culture, volcanic hot springs and natural landscapes, providing a mix of museums, shrines and gardens. It is also known for its amazingly blue water and excellent sail boating environment. Because we were there for only a few hours, I was unable to take in all those wonderful attractions.

Tugboats towing what appears to be a boomHowever I did get to take some fantastic pictures of Kinko Bay (as you see on the left), walk along the boardwalk next to the Kagoshima Aquarium, meet a sweet Japanese lady (who just wanted to have her picture taken with "the tall Canadian" man), and bump into a genuine California girl who was just hangin' at the docks, waiting to catch a boat to Okinawa. And, yes, I also managed to get close to
Kagoshima's most famous attraction, the Mount Sakurajima Volcano. The ferry trip across the bay to the volcano is most alluring because you don't have to pay until you get to the other side--and it only takes 10 minutes. So I hopped on and went nuts with my shutter release button.

Fabulous Ferry Fetish...
The next batch of pics is a result of my fascination for ferries. I have no idea as to why, but I find them almost as compellingly fascinating as airplanes and flying. So, as I did with all the aviation pics on this site, I now flagrantly and brazenly indulge in my fetish for fascinating ferries.
