During the entire 11.5 hour flight, I took only eight pictures. I sat in an aisle seat, next to an English speaking Korean student who had been studying at the University of British Columbia. I don't remember the details of our conversation but it was an interesting, peaceful flight. We landed at Incheon International Airport, a brand-new, state of the art facility that had just opened the day before!

INCHEON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

 Information and Images from Experts

This WONDERFUL image was created by another photographer, but it looks great on this page, don't you think? CLICK! to view FULL SIZE Incheon International Airport (IIA) took 8 years to build, at a cost of over USD $4.5 billion. It's situated on a man-made land-bridge between two islands in the Yellow Sea, 50 kilometres from downtown Seoul. The arc-shaped, 6,000,000 square-foot passenger terminal consists of a 4-story building with a 2-story basement, and it's the biggest one all over the world. In fact, this "Winged City" is also the largest building in all of South Korea! Note: the above photo, with the lovely "Winged City" logo (watermark) in the center, is provided courtesy of the official IIA website.

Among the amenities are high-tech, all-weather landing systems and, for passengers, cyber ports and self check-in booths. I'm particularly impressed with the series of moving walkways which ensures that users will not walk any distances greater than 400 feet.

CLICK! to view FULL SIZEGeographically, located between Japan and China from East to West, and between Siberia and Southeast Asia from South to North, the location of IIA represents a premier regional gateway to major air routes to about 40 cities, each with more than one million people. All of these cities are within 3.5 hours-flying time. Thus Incheon International Airport is expected to become the premier air traffic hub for all of Northeast Asia. The airport currently has 44 gates at the passenger terminal and two 12,375-foot runways, with more being planned for the future.
