There IS a "drug"
available to us that promises to extend life and improve the quality of
living at a very economical price. That "drug" is food. Food is medicine;
the "pharmacy" is our grocery store; the refrigerator is our "medicine

About 2500 years ago
Hippocrates said, "Let food be your medicine; let medicine be your food."
The idea isn't new; it just hasn't been taken seriously enough. His thought
is getting more difficult to ignor as more and more scientific research
confirms the truth of the statement. There is more information on diet,
food and nutrition available on the world wide web than most people have
time to read. The foods we ingest influence just about everything our body
can do: energy level, hormonal balance (particularly insulin), mental acuity,
cell replacement and repair, metabolism, immune system fortification, bone
density, physical stamina, digestion, sleep, cardiovascular health, blood
pressure, etc. What does a body do with excess food? It stores it as fat.
The body makes extra hormones to store the fat. Now the body has two problems:
extra fat and extra hormone. One of the most important hormones in the
diet is insulin which helps store fat and process carbohydrate sugars.
Excess food causes the body to create excess insulin. Research indicates
that excess insulin accelerates the aging process within the body! (Those
who want to know more about this should study the writings of Dr. Barry
Sears and his Zone Diet.) It is really a complex body chemistry complicated
by individual uniquenesses. At the danger of oversimplifying it just remember:
less food equals less fat; less fat equals less insulin; less insulin equals
longer life. The food we eat or decline to eat is the "drug" that controls
the fat level and hormone levels inside our body which in turn influence
how we feel and what our bodies are capable of doing. See, we really are
what we eat!
