ARTHRITIS AND DIET |
Since symptoms of arthritis can
vary from day to day, it is natural to think that what you ate yesterday
caused or reduced the arthiritis pain felt today. Researchers do recommend
a balanced diet for people with arthritis.
Research has shown several other connections between food and some forms of arthritis, especially allergic arthritis. These include dietary links to gout and Reiter's Syndrome. People with gout may have a painful attack if they eat foods with high levels of chemicals called purines. Foods that are high in purines include wine, anchovies, beer, gravies and liver. Food and water spoiled by certain bacteria can lead to a form of arthritis called Reiter's Syndrome. People who develop this rare kind of arthritis seem to have a defect in their body's defense system. Diet may serve as a risk factor by increasing your chances for developing arthritis. Diet may also change the way the body's immune system reacts in arthritis that involve inflammation. It may increase the swelling, redness, warmth, pain and tenderness. Some studies using small groups of people with certain types of arthritis suggest, but do not prove, that changes in diet may help. Some promising, though inconclusive, results have been found in certain arthritis cases using dietary restriction (fasting) as part of the treatment. Allergic arthritis is a type of arthritis often not recognized as a food allergy. There is a dramatic, acute and painful swelling in one or more joints. The inflammation is caused by eating a food; either a new food eaten for the first time or a regular food eaten in excess or not realized by the person to cause the inflammation. This may be confused with gout. Any food can cause allergic arthritis. The most common food triggers are beef, pork, milk, eggs, processed wheat ("white" flour), chocolate and coffee. Usually, allergic reaction resulting in joint pain and swelling begin within three hours of eating a food trigger. Treatment consists of knowing and avoiding food that causes inflammations. Some people claim that special diets, foods, or supplements can cure or prevent other/all forms of arthritis. Consider such claims health frauds. There is not enough scientific evidence for such claims. Researchers stress the importance of a healthy diet for people with arthritis. There are three major ways to change to a healthier diet for people with arthritis, including:
Researchers are looking with considerable interest at how diet may prevent or reverse arthritis. There is not yet enough scientific evidence to recommend that people with specific kinds of arthritis change their diet. Any claims for a special diet to prevent, cure or reverse arthritis are unproven and should be considered false. NOTE: The New Pyramid Diet makes no claim that it may be able to prevent, cure or reverse arthritis. However, individuals who suffer with arthritis and lose and maintain a healthy weight report that their arthritis symptoms are much less severe. |
